Above are two magazine cover shots for stories that I wrote and illustrated with my own images. The Short-Eared Owl has an interesting hunting strategy: It detects prey mostly by sound, using its disc-shaped face to capture any perceptible rustle. When prey is located, the owl will flutter, then half-flip itself sideways and make what appears as a floppy dive. This owl, captured in East Edison, a Samish unit of the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, is starting the flip by pointing one of its wings downward. At the same time, as in this image, the other wing flutters to make the half turn. Because of heavy rains and resulting floods that killed off their food source, the owls were not present the previous year in what had been a reliable area to spot them in Western Washington, where I live. It was a bit concerning as Short-Eared Owls have been in heavy decline throughout their distribution and are considered a Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) in my state. To much relief, the partial migrants returned in the fall to hunt the open agricultural fields mostly in their usual numbers.
