Growing up, my Aunt Pat Schultz Nelson was upbeat and caring. In adulthood, she was one of the biggest supporters of me and my work. She re-posted all of my images on social media. I sent her one of my calendars every year, and she always sent a thank-you note; so many recipients don't even acknowledge getting them. This #wintersolstice post is dedicated to my Aunt Pat. I like to think the heavens are even more beautiful when graced by her presence. #RestInBeauty

This is a bittersweet day for me. I lost my mother

This is a bittersweet day for me. I lost my mother, Chiyoko Nelson, last night to lung cancer; she passed peacefully at home. By some divine coincidence, the @nationalwildlife today lifted its embargo on the announcement that my photo of two owlets in Seward Park won first place in the Baby Animals category of its international competition, which drew 29,000 entries this year. I told my family last night that this announcement was coming soon and that I dedicated my first category win to my Mom, who was my biggest fan and the first ever customer of a print of one of my nature photos. It hung on the wall in full view of her during her final days in hospice care.

The image will be published in @nationalwildlifemagazine winter issue later this month. The same image earned Highly Honored from @naturesbestphotomagazine international competition, which attracted more than 25,000 entries and will appear in print also later this December. I also was informed today that another owl image of mine placed in the North American Nature Photographers of America (@nanpapix) 2025 Showcase. My photography earned six recognitions in international bird and wildlife competitions this year, and already one for 2025.

I hope I did my Mom proud.

I am blown away to reveal that my photo of these B

I am blown away to reveal that my photo of these Barred Owlets has been selected as Highly Honored in the Animal Antics category of the Nature’s Best Photography International Awards. There were more than 25,000 entries from 62 countries, so I am indeed highly honored.

As some of you know, I have been focusing on photographing "nearby nature" to complement my work helping diversify the outdoors. Nearby = access. I'm thrilled that this image was captured in Seward Park, the "back yard" of the most diverse part of Seattle. In the 98118 zip code, where the park is located, more 60% of residents are non-white, some 60 different languages are spoken, and nearly 30%, including me, were born outside the U.S.
